Trials and Tribulations of a Free TV PT.1

I recently moved into a new house(rental) and I finally had the space to do something kind of special . On my 3rd floor (cape cod finished Attic), there was a space that was really too small for a bedroom but just right for a game room. I was able to setup my many consoles and setup a 19 inch tube, 32 inch LCD TV combination for this space. The 32 was a comfortable size  and anything larger would have been a tight fit. I was perfectly fine with this setup….or so I thought.

My father finally made it into the modern age with the purchase of his first Flat screen tv. During a late January/ early Feb Superbowl sale he ended up buying a 39 inch 120hz HAier TV. I know I know .. a total off brand, but he got a 40 inch for under 300 dollars. The reason he even considered this brand was my fault. My main tv is a 46 inch Haier I had picked up in 2012  during a black friday sale on Amazon. In the 2 years I’ve owned this TV It has been rock solid. In 2012 a 46 inch tv for 329 dollars was a pretty good deal.20150622_153821

My father had the tv for a few months, and he woke up one morning to find that it would not respond to his remote.  He could get up and Switch it on by hand, but then it would switch off and it also began to have problems even responding to the TV’s actual buttons. The TV was out of walk in warranty from the dealer  and would require him to send it in himself. The cost was found to be prohibitive so he packed the TV in its box and put it aside. He replaced it with an LG he also found on sale with similar specs.

Fast forward a year. I was visiting my Pop for Father’s day and I asked about the TV. He said it was in the box and I could have it if I wanted. Hey, a free 40 inch TV.. SURE.  I figured I could take it apart and see if I could diagnose the issue. At worst Id end up breaking a broken TV at best I might be able to figure out what happened.

So on a Slow Monday morning I carried this Big TV into work, set it up on a work bench and started the process of opening it up. I was able to get the back off and get to the IR sensor module. I wish I had taken the Before pic (my bad) but It had a huge ball of Green Corrosion and the Actual connector (5 pin) was dissolved. It seems My Fathers cat peed on the TV and the IR sensor specifically. I showed this to one of my coworkers and He thought It might be salvageable. We were able to remove the cable and take it down to a Soldering station.

He cleaned it up and removed the Connector from the IR Module. He decided to just solder the wire harness directly to the module. Almost 2 inches had to be trimmed from the harness because The corrosion had actually crept up the shielded wire. cat pee is strong.

So After a day at work I have a working 40 inch TV 120hz..ish.. So I was very excited to upgrade my gameroom tv with this Big boy.. Its gonna be awesome, or so I thought..

End of Part1.
